Australia’s Director Identification Number (Director ID) regime is entering its next phase, with changes that will have implications for company directors and businesses across the country.

While Director IDs have been mandatory for directors for several years, new requirements commencing 1 July 2027 will bring Director IDs into ASIC’s company reporting framework.

What Is a Director ID?

A Director ID is a unique 15-digit identifier issued by Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) to individuals who are directors, or intend to become directors, of Australian companies. The number is permanent and remains with a person for life, regardless of how many companies they are involved with.

The purpose of the regime is to:

  • prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities
  • help combat illegal phoenix activity
  • improve the accuracy and transparency of Australia’s corporate system
  • make it easier to trace directors’ relationships with companies over time.

What’s Changing?

From 1 July 2027, companies will be required to provide their directors’ Director IDs to ASIC through company reporting processes.

This marks a significant change from the current system, where Director IDs are administered by ABRS and are not currently recorded on the companies register.

ASIC has confirmed that companies will need to provide Director IDs through reporting processes including annual reviews and when notifying ASIC of changes to directors’ details. Further information and guidance about how the new requirements will operate will be provided before 1 July 2027.

Over time, the companies register will also display whether a company has provided Director IDs for its directors.

What Does This Mean for Directors?

Directors should ensure their Director ID information is available to the person responsible for maintaining their company’s records, such as the company secretary, authorised representative or ASIC agent.

Directors should also check that:

  • they hold a valid Director ID
  • their ABRS details are accurate and up to date
  • their company details held by ASIC are correct
  • all current directors are correctly recorded
  • any incorrect names, addresses or contact details are updated.

Checking these details now may help avoid delays or issues when the new requirements commence.

Director ID Compliance

ASIC is responsible for enforcing Director ID offences under the Corporations Act 2001.

Existing penalties apply to offences including:

  • failing to have a Director ID when required
  • failing to apply for a Director ID when directed
  • applying for multiple Director IDs
  • misrepresenting a Director ID.

Serious penalties can apply, so directors should ensure they understand and meet their obligations.

Why Businesses Should Prepare Now

Although the new reporting requirements do not commence until 1 July 2027, businesses can start preparing now.

Practical steps include:

  • Reviewing current company and director records.
  • Confirming all directors have obtained a Director ID.
  • Checking that director details recorded with ASIC and ABRS are accurate and consistent.
  • Updating any incorrect names, addresses or contact details.

Ensuring Director IDs are securely maintained with company records and are available to the appropriate company secretary, authorised representative or ASIC agent.

Businesses with multiple directors may find it particularly useful to review their records now, reducing the risk of delays or issues once the new requirements take effect.

Final Thoughts

The upcoming Director ID changes are part of broader improvements to Australia’s business registers, designed to reduce fraud and identity misuse, improve the accuracy of company information and make it easier to identify company directors.

While most directors should already have a Director ID, the significant change from 1 July 2027 is that companies will be required to provide those IDs to ASIC through company reporting processes.

For directors and business owners, now is a good time to check that records are accurate, Director IDs are readily available and the appropriate processes are in place ahead of the new requirements.
