Every business owner I work with has a budget — revenue targets, cost forecasts, cash flow projections. Ask the same person what their household spends each month, and most of them guess.

It’s an odd blind spot. We’ll review a P&L for a business turning over a few hundred thousand dollars, then run our personal finances — often the bigger number once you add the mortgage, the car, and school fees — entirely on vibes.

The fix is the same discipline that works in business: track it, categorise it, review it on a schedule.

Three Steps to Start

  • Pull three months of transactions and categorise them — housing, food, transport, discretionary, savings.
  • Set a target for each category based on what you actually spend.
  • Review monthly — five minutes, same day each month.

Why This Matters More Than You Think: HEM and Borrowing Power

Here’s the part most people don’t realise until they apply for a loan. Lenders don’t just take your stated living expenses at face value — they benchmark them against the Household Expenditure Measure (HEM), a standardised estimate of minimum living costs based on your income, location, and family size.

If your declared expenses come in below HEM, the lender uses HEM instead — which can understate your real position and, in some cases, work in your favour on serviceability. But if your actual spending is higher than HEM and you haven’t tracked it properly, you risk under-declaring expenses on a loan application — which can slow down or even derail an approval when the lender’s own transaction analysis (most now run one) doesn’t match what you’ve stated.

In short: knowing your real numbers isn’t just good practice, it directly affects how much you can borrow and how smoothly that borrowing gets approved.

Software That Helps

  • Bank-native tools — built into most major banking apps, free but limited depth.
  • Dedicated apps — Pocketbook, Frollo, MoneyBrilliant, using open banking to auto-categorise.
  • AI tools — feed a statement export to an AI assistant and get instant categorisation, trend spotting, and plain-language summaries, without building a spreadsheet.
